Can we have a little chat for a moment? I’d really love your thoughts.
If you homeschool, or are thinking about doing so, what are some of your concerns? What keeps you awake a night? What makes you hesitate to withdraw your children from school and dive into home education? What makes you question whether or not you’re homeschooling “right?”
I’d love to hear from you. My hope is that as a homeschooling mom and former teacher, maybe I can help to ease your concerns. My hope is that perhaps I can help you gain the courage to dive into what has been one of the most fun and rewarding experiences of my life: home educating my daughter!
Please don’t be afraid to be honest here. Use a fake name if that makes you more comfortable. Can I be honest here too? If I’m quite frank, I wasn’t sure I’d be able to handle being with my energetic child all day, every day and night. Oh, I cringe that I even typed that, but if you’ve been with me long enough, you know I’m rather forthcoming. I prefer that.
I think our problems and sadness arise when we hold things inside us…the burning things that make us feel ashamed, when really, a lot of other people are sharing the same feelings and if just one person speaks up, it frees up that space for more goodness.
I’m an introvert. I’m quite happy at home. I’m quite happy doing quiet activities like reading, writing, sewing, painting, and other such things. I honestly wasn’t sure how my natural inclinations would handle the loud raucous behavior of a little child all day long. I was afraid I’d get impatient and well, sometimes I do. I was afraid I’d raise my voice and well, occasionally I do. However, most of the time, things flow beautifully and part of that is the absence of a rigid schedule and our free spirit regarding education and curriculum. It’s a philosophy that may not be for everyone, but it works for us.
That’s the key and I feel like I’m replaying a record here – the key is that you can make your home education look however you want it to look, so it best suits your family.
Okay, so please, if you have questions about home education, please comment below and I’ll follow-up, either in a new blog post, or within the comment thread.
With that, I wish you a wonderful weekend.
